Illinois Woman Caught Removing Goose Eggs Outside Mall

The Niles Police Department is asking for the public's help identifying a person seen removing goose eggs from a nest near Golf Mill Mall.

Not sure what compels someone to do this, but this day in age you'd think we're smart enough to notice cameras all around us.  Some of us aren't the brightest when it comes to stuff like that, though.  This is one of those moments.

According to police, the incident happened April 20th at around 4:18pm near a building along the mall property.  Authorities say a woman was observed taking eggs from a goose nest and putting them in her pockets before walking away.  The incident was captured on video.

Police have released information about the case and are asking anyone who recognizes the person involved to come forward.

"The Migratory Bird Treaty and Endangered Species acts prohibit the trapping, possession, or killing of most birds, their eggs and nests, without a permit." [dph]

The matter is being handled by the village's animal control division.  Anyone with information regarding the individual is asked to contact Animal Control Officer Cole at aec@vniles.com.

The incident has drawn attention online, with many reacting to both the unusual nature of the case and the risks involved with approaching a goose nest.  Geese are known to aggressively defend their nesting areas during spring.

Officials have not released additional details about whether the eggs were recovered or whether any charges are being considered at this time.
