Steak continues to be one of our favorite meals, but a popular steakhouse with six locations here in Minnesota just announced it will be closing several restaurants.

It's no surprise that Minnesotans like a good steak, right? In fact, steak is a popular meal not just here in the Land of 10,000 Lakes but across the country. According to a survey in this Fox News story, steak is America's favorite meal. And, steak is also what nearly 66 percent of Americans say they would have as their LAST meal too.

And here in the U.S., we eat a LOT of steak: Americans consumed 27.6 billion pounds of beef in 2020, according to the US Department of Agriculture. The United States accounted for 21.2% of all the beef consumed worldwide, the story said.

That's why it's a little surprising that this popular steakhouse, with several locations scattered across the Land of 10,000 Lakes, just announced that it will be closing over 40 of its locations. So which popular steakhouse are we talking about here?

That's right, it's Outback Steakhouse. The popular chain is owned by Bloomin' Brands, Inc., and according to USA Today, is going to close 41 locations soon. In case you're curious, there are currently six Outback Steakhouse locations across the North Star State:

  • Bloomington
  • Coon Rapids
  • Hermantown
  • Maplewood
  • Inver Grove Heights
  • Rochester

So just which locations is Outback Steakhouse going to close? Well, that's a good question. According to USA Today, the chain isn't saying just *which* locations will be shuttered, though it did say on its corporate conference call on February 23rd that the "majority of these restaurants were older assets with leases from the '90s and early 2000s."

This Nation's Restaurant News story shed a little more light on the announcement, noting that "A  Bloomin’ Brands spokesperson said some closures are completed and 33 were closing on Friday, February 23rd," the story said.

That story also said that as of late last year,  Bloomin' Brands Inc. owned 688 Outback locations, so if your local Gopher State Outback Steakhouse location is STILL open, there's a good chance it may have escaped this latest round of closings. We hope, anyway!
