Some high school seniors were crushed when their high school decided to cancel the varsity football season.

No Football Season For These Illinois High School Seniors

Football is by far my favorite sport. I played for 8 years, 5th grade, and through high school. I had a blast. I wish I could've played in college but I didn't have the size or skills. It was a big part of my life, especially my senior year. I couldn't imagine not having that experience.

I played on a couple of average teams and the rest were bad. Luckily, we weren't horrible. My teams did at least win some games. I feel for some of those squads that have those massive losing streaks. That would be hard.

In my freshman year of high school, we had a lot of students come out for the team. By the end of the season, over half had quick. Each year, there were fewer players. In my last year, we only had 13 seniors. It was crazy.

I know there are high schools throughout Illinois and even in Rockford, that have struggled to get kids to come out for the team. Most of the time, they'll just call up the underclassman. Sometimes, the district will only run a varsity team.

Recently, Riverton High School in Springfield canceled its varsity football season for 2024. There were only 2 seniors on the team. The roster is around 20, mostly freshmen and sophomores. I feel so bad for them. The school will host a JV team and they are allowed to be on the team but it's just not the same.
