A Fair Food Favorite with Illinois Roots
Before the corn dog became a staple at fairs, festivals, and roadside stands in the U.S., its story was taking shape in downstate Illinois.
The capital city is recognized as the birthplace of the corn dog, with the Cozy Dog making its debut in 1946 and appearing at the Illinois State Fair that same year.
From Springfield to Historic Route 66
The story continued in 1949, when the Waldmire family opened the Cozy Dog Drive-In along historic Route 66 in Springfield. The restaurant still operates today at 2935 S. Sixth Street, serving its signature battered hot dog on a stick using the same basic batter recipe developed by Ed Waldmire in 1946.
That history has helped make "Cozy Dog" more than a restaurant name. In Springfield, it has become a distinctive team tied to one of Illinois' most recognizable contributions to American fair food.
Cozy Dog Weekend Celebrates Illinois History
The 2026 Illinois State Fair is putting that history front and center during Cozy Dog Weekend. On Saturday, fairgoers can gather at 10:30 a.m. at the Route 66 Experience for the dedication of a new addition celebrating Springfield's Cozy Dog legacy.
State and local leaders, tourism officials, Route 66 representatives, the Illinois State Fair, and the Waldmire family will take part in the celebration, and Illinois marks Route 66's 100th anniversary.
The fairgrounds themselves sit along the historic Mother Road.
Sunday Turns the Corn Dog Into a Family Tradition
Sunday will bring Family Day and Cozy Dog Sunday, where fairgoers are encouraged to share photos enjoying a corn dog and join the statewide celebration.
