As we all start our countdown to ring in the new year, many are counting down to celebrate legalized marijuana in Illinois. However, if you're a gun owner, you may want to think twice before heading to the dispensary.

Even though marijuana will be legal in the state of Illinois, it's still illegal on the federal level and that can cause issues for gun owners. When applying for a FOID card, one of the questions has to do with marijuana use. Federal law states that a person who smokes is unable to purchase and even possess a firearm even if marijuana is legal in that state. You could lie, but then you're facing a federal penalty of 5 years in prison and a $10,000 fine according to WAND.

Unfortunately, until a law is passed that allows you to do both, you have to decide if you want to own a gun or smoke weed.
