The Odds of Winning the Lottery in Illinois Are Absolutely Wild

Luck might never be on my side, but it's always fun to know what kind of chances I have of winning the lottery.

Maybe I should stop making plans for the millions I've been dreaming about winning after seeing these odds.

If you're playing the Powerball, your odds of hitting the jackpot are 1 in 292.2 million.  You have to match all five numbers plus the Powerball.

Mega Millions?  Yeah, forget that.  LEAVE THAT TO YOUR DREAMS.

Your odds of winning that jackpot are 1 in 302.5 million, which requires matching all five numbers plus the Mega Ball.

Basically, if you're buying a Powerball or Mega Millions ticket, you're paying a couple bucks for the privilege of imagining what you'd do with hundreds of millions of dollars.

But Illinois has tons of lottery games with very different odds.

More reasonable odds of winning, I'd say!

For Lucky Day Lotto, your odds are 1 in 575,757 if you match five out of the 45 numbers.

For the Lotto, it's 1 in 2.07 million if you match all six numbers.

And then there's Pick 3 and Pick 4.

A straight Pick 3 bet has odds of 1 in 1,000, while Pick 4 is 1 in 10,000.

Suddenly, those Powerball odds are making me feel a little better about my chances of finding a parking spot in downtown Rockford.

Of course, winning a jackpot comes with a lot of responsibility, too.
