Petition Launched for Quentin Tarantino to Direct ‘Deadpool 2’ After Tim Miller’s Exit
When Tim Miller exited Deadpool 2 over creative differences (with Ryan Reynolds, of all people!) we were pretty shocked. The first Deadpool was great, an R-rated, funny, and blood-soaked respite from the formula we’ve come to expect from Marvel, and the prospect of a sequel was equally as exciting. But with Miller’s exit, Deadpool’s future has become a little more uncertain — so uncertain, that fans have set up their own petition to get Quentin Tarantino for the sequel instead.
Two days ago, a Change.org petition was launched to get Tarantino to sign on for Deadpool 2, and at time of writing, it already has almost 2,000 backers. Carl Champion Jr., who started the page, explained himself in a short description:
If there was ever a chance to see Tarantino do a project almost guaranteed to make a billion dollars, this is it. We got a great taste of what this could be like in Kill Bill, but imagine having a guy like Tarantino write dialogue for The Merc with the Mouth! It would be so glorious. Join me!
Later, Champion posted an update, saying that Tarantino is the best choice due to his genre-bending abilities and snappy dialogue writing skills. It’s true that a Deadpool movie would combine two things Tarantino loves the most (humor and violence), but would he really be the right choice? The man enjoys playing around with genre conventions, sure, but it’s doubtful that a superhero movie in the vein of what Marvel has put out so far would be his cup of tea. He’d be out of that pre-production meeting before you could even say “creative differences.” Way back when, he did almost direct a Luke Cage movie, that particular character’s roots in blaxploitation films probably right up his alley, but it’s pretty difficult to reconcile Tarantino’s very individualist style of filmmaking with Marvel’s lust for the formula that makes the most bank. And, let’s be real, Change.org petitions rarely actually change anything. Besides, the man is busy anyway.
We’ll be keeping an eye out for updates on the Deadpool 2 director situation, as the movie is still scheduled for January 12, 2018.
