You might be me if you didn't know that the Aurora Borealis was visible earlier this week in Rockford.

I always have to ask myself what exactly I am doing at the very point when the Northern Lights are visible this far south.

Was I watching a TV show that just couldn't be paused, washing that one last dish, or eating that one last scoop of ice cream?

Either way, the Aurora Borealis was apparently visible in our neck of the woods just a few days ago, and I, like many of you, missed it.

Thankfully, some folks managed to capture some really cool looks with their cameras and share them on YouTube.

While I may have missed the recent show of the Northern Lights, there's hope on the horizon.

My Stateline reports that we might be in for another spectacular display today or Friday.

The word is that the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration (NOAA) is tracking a "fast coronal mass ejection (CME)" from the sun that apparently "erupted Tuesday night."

This reason for the aurora is caused when "charged particles hit the Earth's magnetic field."

For those of us who missed the spectacle earlier this week, there's hope.

The Northern Lights might grace our skies again, possibly tonight or Friday.

So, next time you hear about the Aurora Borealis, remember to take a break from your routine, put the ice cream tub down for a second, and look up.

You might just catch a glimpse of something truly magical.

25 costliest hurricanes of all time

Although the full extent of damage caused by Hurricane Ian in the Southwest is still being realized, Ian is already being called one of the costliest storms to ever hit the U.S. Stacker took a look at NOAA data to extrapolate the costliest U.S. hurricanes of all time.

LOOK: The most extreme temperatures in the history of every state

Stacker consulted 2021 data from the NOAA's State Climate Extremes Committee (SCEC) to illustrate the hottest and coldest temperatures ever recorded in each state. Each slide also reveals the all-time highest 24-hour precipitation record and all-time highest 24-hour snowfall.
