If you're going to call in sick to work, you better have a pretty good excuse.

Killing off your grandma three times did not make the list. Yes, shamefully, my poor grandma has falsely passed away three times, my dad's had a heart attack and I've had a deadly case of PMS. All were horrible excuses and eventually,  I'm sure karma will catch up to me for putting my family members through made up tragedies; but the reality is, if you're going to call in sick, make it simple.

That's what experts say. Stop making up crazy lies. An insurance company recently polled 1,000 business owners and CEOs to find what they consider good reasons for calling out sick.  Here are the top nine . . .

1. You have the flu.  Just be sure it's flu season. I feel like it's always flu season.

2. Your back went out. Great excuse, especially if you can't work remotely from home.

3. You had some sort of accident and hurt yourself. Slipping in the driveway or falling down the stairs are personal favorites of mine.

4. You're just really stressed out.  Interesting. Can you imagine saying you're just too stressed out to come in, and your boss being ok with it?

5. You had elective surgery. Elective??

6. You're depressed.  Be careful with this one. I always feel like being depressed requires a note from a shrink to prove it's not just PMS or a hangover.

7. You're having an anxiety attack.  More like they'll give you one when you come back to work because you missed a day.

8. You have a cold. Lots of employers expect you to show up anyway; just don't breath on your boss or co-workers.

And 8% of employers said NONE of those excuses are a good enough reason to miss work.

What's the craziest or best excuse you've used to get out of work?
