When Does Tornado Season Officially End In Illinois?

According to weather experts, nearly 80% of all tornadoes in Illinois occur between April 1st and June 30th.  That makes late spring and early summer the peak of tornado season across the state.  June is actually the heart of the season!

While June 30th is often considered the end of Illinois' peak tornado season, tornadoes can happen at any time of the year if weather conditions are right. Actually, I read that Illinois experienced tornadoes during the fall and even winter months.  They're simply less common outside of the April-June window.

Because tornadoes can develop quickly, it's important to have a plan before severe weather strikes.  When a tornado warning is issued, you may only have seconds to get yourself and your family to safety.

The safest place to be is inside a substantial building, away from windows and doors, move to the lowest floor and take shelter in a small interior room such as a bathroom, closet, or hallway without windows.
