Walgreens Closing Another Rockford Location in 2026

We knew Walgreens was going to close locations all over America, but we hoped it wouldn’t be another one in the Forest City.

Turns out those hopes were seriously dashed as the news came down today that Walgreens will indeed shut down another Rockford location.

Recent Walgreens Closures in Rockford

After already seeing two different Walgreens close in consecutive years at:

• Kishwaukee Street in 2025
• Downtown East State Street in 2024

Now, another East Street Walgreens will officially shutter, making it the third consecutive year of closures in Rockford.

Located at 5503 East State Street, Walgreens announced it will close on May 19.

Walgreens Nationwide Closures Continue

This is just another domino falling for Walgreens, which announced it would close 1200 stores nationwide.

Such a shame, too, considering Walgreens is based in Illinois. It's also their 125th year in business. After starting in Chicago in 1901 and founded by Charles Walgreen Sr., the once simple pharmacy developed into a major chain in just a few decades.

Unfortunately, that's a thing of the past at this point. At some point, finding an open Walgreens might start feeling like a scavenger hunt.
