Flipping the calendar over to a new year means new faces to root for and cheer on in athletic events.

In women's sports, there are still plenty of recognizable names that we have known for many years but as the Winter Olympics quickly approaches, a new crop of athletes will be potentially taking center stage.

That doesn't mean Mediafeed's list of 20 Women Athletes to Watch in 2022 only includes Olympians.

However, there is one person, a University of Wisconsin grad, that also made the list of athletes we need to watch for who for in 2022.

She's a hockey player, and Abby Roque seems like the real deal.

Abby Roque is set to make her Olympic debut with Team USA in Beijing after an impressive collegiate hockey career at the University of Wisconsin. The 24-year-old will look to lead the U.S to their second-consecutive gold medal come February.

Born in Minnesota, MSN in November said Abby Roque "could become the first Native-American female athlete to represent Team USA in the sport at the Olympics."

Well, just today Mining Journal said that Roque and another person were "chosen by USA Hockey as the U.S. Women seek to defend their gold medal from the South Korea Games in 2018."
