This spring, bears are likely to wander into Illinois again.

Last Year

Do you remember this happened last spring? Wild black bears were traveling through several states including Illinois and Wisconsin.

At first, I thought it was a joke or prank. Then, there were several sightings. Finally, people starting posting videos. That will make anyone a believer.

Even though, the experts informed residents that they should stay clear of the animal. Many people were following it around. Luckily, no one got hurt or attacked. That is including any of the bears.

They Are Back

I do not think they ever received an official invitation to visit Illinois. That did not stop them. They must have enjoyed it because officials are saying it will most likely happen again so do not be surprised.

According to thecentersquare.com,

"Illinois residents may be surprised to see some large, furry visitors over the next couple of months as black bears are making their way down from Wisconsin and passing through Illinois in increasing numbers."

Why

“They will disperse away from the area where they were born and seek out new places to establish a home range and look for mates.”

Prepare

"Pretty much anything is food to a bear, from skunk cabbage to rotting roadkill, so he suggests minimizing food sources around the house if you don’t want a scavenging visit."

What If

If you bump into a bear, here are some tips to stay safe. Do not forget the bear does not want to be there either.

  • Do not run.
  • Remain calm.
  • Make your presence known.
  • Move away slowly.
  • Avoid going in the same direction.
  • Give it space.
  • If the bear approaches you.
    • Stay in place.
    • Make loud noises.
    • Let it know you are there.

Hopefully, you will not have that issue this spring.
