If California goes through with the change it could very well make its way to Illinois.

The California Department of Transportation is considering making a change to their gas tax and is considering replacing those with mileage fees.

According to ABC 7, "The California Road Charge Pilot Program created by the Legislature in 2014 will need 5,000 volunteers."

Those volunteers will help decide whether or not to make the switch to mileage fees in place of a gas tax.

With more and more gas saving cars on the road placing using an outdated gas tax won't generate the amount of revenue that each state needs to keep highways and roads maintained.

Oregon has already instituted the tax, and with California testing the idea, Illinois will be soon to follow.

This is how the mileage fee works in Oregon: "On July 1, Oregon launched its third pilot program, asking 5,000 volunteers to pay 1.5 cents per mile they drive. Vehicle mileage is tracked by a device plugged into each car, and gas taxes are refunded."

If this does happen, depending on how much you drive you could pay more.

If a mileage tax was levied would you drive less? Car pool? Would you consider a job that made for a shorter commute?
