These days, the bride and groom's wedding party is a group of friends and family who will stand with them at the alter and sit with them at dinner.

But, it turns out, the bridal party used to exist for a much bigger reason.

According to Ranker, the best man was supposed to be the 'best' man to ward away attackers during a wedding ceremony.
