If you live in Loves Park, and have for quite a while, there's a very good chance that you and your family have been to the Dairy Depot.

It's been the place where so many families and friends would anxiously wait for opening day so they could continue to make great summer memories and keep cool on long, hot days.

The ice cream has to be something pretty special because the line was always so long; no matter what time of day it was. That's why I never stopped by, and now, I'm kicking myself because it turns out that it was more than just the ice cream that was special, it was the owner, John Elliot.

According to WIFR and Dairy Depot's Facebook page, John passed away last Thursday from a heart attack, and on Father's Day they held a memorial banner signing in his honor.

Surely some residents would question if and when the Dairy Depot would re-open and we've learned that current owner, Brittany Artz, will be holding a Grand Reopening on June 29th at 4 p.m.

Funeral arrangements have also been announced, with a visitation to be held this Thursday at Riverside Community Church in Machesney Park from 4 p.m. to 7 p.m. , and the funeral service will be held Friday morning at 10:30 a.m.
