Door County, Wisconsin is a 2,370 square-mile peninsula that juts into Lake Michigan and contains many towns. Let me share some of the best things to do when visiting this underrated destination.

For Families:

Door County is a playground for families. Start with Peninsula State Park where you can hike, bike, or enjoy a picnic by the water.

The kids will love Nicolet Beach for swimming and sandcastle building. One highlight of our trip was visiting The Farm in Sturgeon Bay. My kids couldn’t get enough of feeding the baby goats and milking a cow.

Don’t miss the Door County Maritime Museum for hands-on learning and fascinating shipwreck stories. And for a truly unique dining experience, take the whole family to a traditional Door County fish boil. The dramatic boil-over was a hit with everyone, and the fish was delicious.

For Couples:

Door County also offers plenty of romance. One of our favorite spots was Cave Point County Park. We took a peaceful kayak trip, exploring the stunning limestone cliffs and underwater caves. It was breathtaking.

A visit to Washington Island is a must. The ferry ride over felt like an adventure, and we loved wandering through the lavender fields at Fragrant Isle.

For a creative date, head to Hands On Art Studio in Fish Creek. We spent an afternoon painting pottery and laughing over our artistic abilities (or lack thereof).

And of course, no romantic getaway is complete without a sunset. Grab a bottle of local wine and head to Ellison Bluff State Natural Area for a view that will take your breath away.
