Police Warning: Lookout for Fake Utility Workers Trying To Gain Access To Your Home
If someone comes knocking at your door, wearing a hardhat, don't answer it.
Police are issuing a warning about fake utility workers that have been showing up at homes in Boone County. In many cases, the individuals show up at a residence, and try to gain access to the home.
The Boone County Sheriff’s have issued an urgent community alert to warn citizens of several reports of these individuals posing as utility workers throughout Boone County and surrounding counties.
In this cold weather, we often see legitimate utility workers repairing everything from downed wires to water main ruptures as a result of the harsh winter weather, especially after snow and ice, so it is not out of the ordinary to expect to see legitimate crews working in the public way. The problem is that some individuals are using this time of the year to impersonate a legitimate utility worker.
The Boone County Sheriff’s Department and the Belvidere Police Department said:
Subjects are posing as utility workers attempting to gain access to citizen’s homes. This is just a reminder to not let subjects into your home unless you have scheduled the appointment. If you have subjects show up to your house asking for access please notify the Sheriff’s Office or Belvidere Police Department by dialing 911 or 815-544-2144 (non-emergency)
If someone comes knocking, you are urged to call police before allowing any individual access to your property.
