The first thing 2020 did to the list of most popular baby names of the year, was to darn near remove the name Karen from the list.

The parenting advice website Babycenter.com has just released its annual list of top baby names. In previous years, we've been inspired by TV shows and movies, when picking a name, this year's choices have a more serious overall tone. That is so 2020. This has been a rough year, on many levels.

Kobe Bryant and his daughter Gianna, who were killed in a helicopter crash at the beginning of 2020, were honored by many families, according to wgntv.com. Kobe jumped to the 216th most popular name, and was the biggest mover on the list. Gianna moved up 52 spots to 24 among girls.

“Parents are seeking comfort by naming their babies after people they admire, especially those who’ve passed on. We expect this trend to continue well into 2021,” said Linda Murray, BabyCenter’s global editor in chief.

After not-so-favorable prominence on social media in 2020, Karen was one of names with the biggest drop in popularity. The name Alexa didn't do too well either, Amazon’s voice assistant was likely to blame.
