If Illinois Had An Official Dessert What Would It Be?
America. Land of the free. Home of the brave. Also, home of some of the best desserts on the planet.
According to the fine folks at Slate, each state should have their own state dessert.
While Slate does point out that only 8 states do have an official state dessert, they wonder about the 42 others.
They do take a few things into consideration.
- No state gets "apple pie" or "chocolate chip cookies."
- States won't share desserts.
- Brands can't be considered a dessert (i.e. Ben & Jerry's in Vermont).
What is Illinois' "official" state dessert then?
Brownies.
Brownies made their debut at the Chicago World’s Fair in 1893, so I thought it was only fair to credit Chicago for one of the world’s favorite baked goods. After all, the original recipe, which contains a pound of chocolate and a pound of butter, is a good one."
Wisconsin gets the "kringle", while Indiana has the "sugar cream pie" and Iowa picks up "cherry pie."
