Illinois DMV Adds Another Week Of COVID Closures

Illinois driver services facilities and Secretary of State departments originally planned to close their doors for the first couple of weeks of this month due to soaring COVID-19 numbers.

Now, Illinois Secretary of State Jesse White has tacked on a third week of closures because the numbers continue to rise.

Online Services Will Still Be Available, But In-Person Transactions Are Off Through January 24th

Secretary White says that Driver Services facilities operating on a Tuesday-Saturday schedule will reopen once again on Tuesday, January 25th.

After careful consideration and out of an abundance of caution, we have decided to extend the closures of offices and Driver Services facilities an additional week, with a reopening date set for Monday, Jan. 24, 2022, due to the continued high number of COVID-19 cases. The health and safety of employees and the public remains my top priority, and face-to-face transactions potentially increase the further spread of the virus. We are pleased to see what appears to be the beginning of a downswing in COVID-19 cases and, if this trend continues, we will reopen Jan. 24 for face-to-face transactions.

Expiration Dates For Driver's Licenses/ID Cards Have Been Extended For An Additional 3 Months

If you've been sweating the idea of your driver's license or Illinois state ID card expiring or being expired, I just want to remind you that the Illinois Secretary of State's Office added yet another extension about a week before Christmas.

Illinois Driver's license and ID card expiration dates had previously been extended to January 1st of this year. Now, with the 3 month extension, expired driver's licenses and ID cards will remain valid until March 31, 2022. The extension does not apply to commercial driver's licenses (CDL) and CDL learner's permits.
