I went looking for the most popular soda in Illinois, and I did not expect this. I stumbled onto a study from Power Brands that ranks the most popular soft drinks across the country, state by state. Naturally, I had to scroll to Illinois right away, because what kind of soda are people sipping more than anywhere else?
Spoiler alert: It's not Coke or Pepsi
Illinois' Favorite Soda
According to the study, Illinois' top soft drink is Sprite. Not Diet Coke, not Pepsi, not even Dr. Pepper. Sprite. And honestly? I get it. Especially the Sprite Zero, which is kind of my weekend go-to with a splash (okay, a splash+) of vodka

Sprite didn't just win over Illinois, either. Michigan, Maryland, Delaware, New Jersey, and Virginia also claimed it as their favorite bubbly beverage. Seems like there's a Midwest-East Coast citrus alliance happening.
Where Did the Others Land?
Coca-Cola still dominates overall, taking the crown in 14 states, mostly in the South and Midwest. Dr. Pepper wasn't far behind with nine states calling it their top drink. Pepsi? Hanging in there, with love from New York and parts of the East Coast. And Mountain Dew remains the hero of Tennessee and beyond.
