A recent incident at the TJ Maxx store in Machesney Park is a stark reminder of why vigilance in dressing rooms is so important.

A former employee, 37-year-old Jeffrey Wallin, has been indicted on multiple charges after allegedly placing a hidden camera in the women's dressing room.  The camera was discovered in the ceiling tiles of one of the rooms in February, though authorities noted it didn't contain a memory card at the time.

While this case thankfully didn't involve recorded footage, it highlights a real fear for shoppers, especially women and children, about privacy in what should be a safe space.

First, always take a look around the room before getting undressed.  Check for anything unusual in the ceiling above the dressing room, corners, vents, or light fixtures.  Small holes or objects that seem out of place can also be warning signs.  Mirrors should be inspected carefully, too.  To-way mirrors can be tricky, but looking for gaps between the mirror and frame can help

Next, trust your instincts.  If a room feels off or there's an object that doesn't belong, alert store staff and move to another room (or try the clothes on at home!).

Finally, know the store's policies.  Many retailers have protocols that protect shoppers' privacy, and staff should be approachable if you notice something unusual.
