I remember the first time I did my taxes after moving to Wisconsin; I was left rocking in the fetal position in the corner of my room and sobbing. I was only a resident for a six short weeks and I still had to pay in? I didn't get it.  I slowly started to realize that everything was just a little bit more expensive too, including clothes and food.

That was just the half of it. Not to long after moving to Wisconsin, I got a job in Illinois and after working my butt off last summer, I finally got a dose of just how high taxes in this state really were. In one month, I had earned an extra $900 and half...HALF....of it was taken for taxes.

I understand that this state doesn't have a budget and the state needs to make up revenue in areas but taking half of one's income is just insane.  I'm sure you feel me. According to Wallethub, Illinois has the highest tax rates in the country. The total state and local tax rates on the median household is a whopping 14.54%; compared to Alaska's at 5.69%.

Rounding out the top of the list include:

1. Illinois

2. Nebraska

3. Wisconsin

4. Connecticut

5. Rhode Island

6. New York

What do you think of the tax rates here? Has it always been like this? Do you think it will ever change?
