It Could Be the End of Annoying Spam Calls in Illinois
The amount of spam and robocalls I get on a daily basis is nothing short of ridiculous. Being a Verizon customer, I'm thankful for the caller ID reading, "Potential Spam", "Spam Caller", or "Unknown Caller," and the fact that a number listed for the first two can be blocked. iPhone users, specifically, can send calls from numbers not saved in their contacts directly to voicemail. I'll share how to do that in a moment but it seems like the days of being misled by spammers and their b.s. numbers could be a thing of the past.
A modified version of Bill SB2225 has been introduced in Springfield aiming to make phone life a little less annoying. We call it spam, they (the lawmakers) call it spoofing.
"Spoof" or "spoofing" means to deliberately falsify the information transmitted on a caller ID display to disguise an identity or phone number.
Illinois Senator Suzy Glowiak Hilton wants to amend the bill, SB2225, with this addition.
A person, business, or organization may not spoof a caller's information or otherwise misrepresent the origin of a telemarketing call unless the person, business, or organization has the right to use the name and phone number displayed.
Further amends with bill SB2225 includes the following,
Requires telephone solicitations placed in a manner other than by a live operator to immediately disclose their identity and the purpose of the call and prompt the recipient of the call to consent to the solicitation.
In addition to the potential requirement for telemarketers to immediately identifying themselves at the beginning of a call, these companies must acknowledge and implement action when the caller requests their phone number to be removed from the system, as well as when callers say "do not call me again." You can read SB2225 in its entirety here.
Here's a quick way to send unknown numbers to voicemail on an iPhone. Open "Settings", click “Phone", switch “Silence Unknown Callers" to the on option.
Andriod users need an app for that and this one should do the trick.
