These Are The Things You’ll Need An Appointment For At Illinois DMV’s

Nothing squishes the soul quite like a trip to the DMV and a new program in Illinois hopes to change that.

There are a lot of DMV things you can get done online in Illinois. The Secretary of State's website allows you to renew your driver's license or ID and your license plate sticker without ever setting foot in a DMV office.

Visits to the DMV just almost always suck. You can be waiting there for what seems like forever. If there's anything you can get done online, that's great, but not all DMV tasks let you do that.

Skip The Line

NBC Chicago reports that starting on September 1st, the state will roll out the Skip The Line program in it's DMV's. Appointments will be required in 44 of the state's busiest DMV offices for tasks like getting a REAL ID, driver's license, or a CDL, or obviously taking an in-person driving test.

Along with this, DMV's in Illinois are extending their hours of operation. All of the DMV's will be open from Monday-Friday from 8:30 a.m.-5:00 p.m.

With Skip The Line, the state's appointment website notes, if you need any of those in-person services, you're not guaranteed to be seen without an appointment, which you're advised to schedule up to 15 days in advance. But if it's other services you need at a DMV, you may not necessarily have to make an appointment for it. It says stuff like title and registration don't require an appointment and are just walk-in services.
