The IDNR is seeking campground hosts for the 2026 camping season at parks, recreation areas, and historic sites throughout Illinois.

The volunteer-based program plays a key role in welcoming visitors and helping maintain positive experiences at some of the state's most popular outdoor destinations.
Officials say the program is especially appealing to retirees, travel enthusiasts, and anyone who enjoys spending time outdoors while interacting with the public.
Hosts Serve as the First Point of Contact for Visitors
Campground hosts are often the first people visitors meet when arriving at Illinois state parks. Duties typically include greeting campers, monitoring arrivals and departures, issuing camping permits, and explaining park facilities and regulations.

Hosts also answer questions about nearby attractions and help visitors plan activities during their stay.
Free Camping and Scenic Assignments Across Illinois
One of the biggest incentives for volunteers is free camping at designated sites within the parks. Hosts can stay in their own RVs, motorhomes, or trailers while serving at their assigned location.
Several Illinois parks currently have opportunities available, including Mississippi Palisades State Park, Chain O' Lakes State Park, Illini State Park, and the Eldon Hazlet State Recreation Area.
How to Apply for a Campground Host Position
Those interested in becoming a campground host can complete and submit a campground host program packet at the state park where they would like to volunteer.
Applicants are encouraged to contact the superintendent at their preferred site with questions about availability and responsibilities.
Illinois state officials say this program remains an important way for visitors to connect with Illinois' natural landscapes while helping support the state park system.
