Green Bay Packers fans are sharing a shocking ‘farewell’ post online, but all signs are pointing to some creative AI trickery.

The Downside of AI Technology

Before I debunk the latest Packers "news" that has fans crying into their cheese hats, I need to admit that I am a big fan of AI technology...when it is used for good.

I use AI technology, like ChatGPT, all the time to make many of my everyday tasks easier to pull off, so I'm pretty good at spotting when someone is using the technology for nefarious reasons.

Here's one example many Packers fans are sharing that’s especially shameful:

That appears to be horrible news for any football fan to see, but I'm 100 percent sure it's complete BS. Here's why.

How To Spot Fake AI Social Media Posts

Let's start with the most important fact: Mike Holmgren is not dead.

The post above looks very legit at first glance, but the more you read, the faker it smells.

First clue: No actual news sources are reporting this. If an NFL legend like Mike Holmgren died, ESPN, NFL Network, and the Green Bay Packers organization would make a big deal about it, and they are not.

Second clue: The photo looks too polished and the "BREAKING NEWS" part was added clearly to grab our attention.

Third clue: The wording. AI technology can produce some flowery words, and I'm pretty sure no sports organization is going to say things like "cathedral of toughness, discipline, and heart".

Fourth clue: The comments. Always take a look at what other people are saying in the comment section. If the majority of people are saying it's fake, then it probably is.

Why Do AI Bots Post Fake News?

If you're wondering why someone would go through the trouble of creating a fake image and a fake story to share online, in most cases a person isn't doing it. An AI bot is.

These posts are designed to hit fans in the feels and trigger instant reactions and shares before anyone bothers to check Google. Lots of engagement boosts social media algorithms, which feeds your brand to more eyeballs, which typically equals more money in this digital media age.

Bottom line: Mike Holmgren is alive. Google first, cry later.
