I spotted a fox (or coyote?) with severe mange in Rockford and I didn't know what to do.

I was driving back to work in the Brendenwood neighborhood when I saw an animal sitting on the road scratching itself.  At first, I thought it was a dog.  Then, I took a closer look when I pulled over and it definitely wasn't a dog.

It was either a fox or coyote with severe mange.

Mange Season In Illinois: What To Do If You Spot Sick Wildlife

Late summer and fall are often referred to as "mange season" because sightings of foxes and other wildlife affected by sarcoptic mange can become more noticeable during this time.  Mange is caused by mites that burrow into an animal's skin, and severe cases can leave animals with extensive hair loss, crusty or irritated skin and an overall unhealthy appearance.

So naturally, after seeing the fox, my first thought was: Who do I call?

I tried Hoo Haven and they directed me to animal control.  Animal control directed me back to Hoo Haven, and at that point nobody was able to assist with the situation.

That was frustrating because when you see an animal that appears to be suffering, you want to do something about it.

But one of the biggest things I learned it that you shouldn't approach or touch a wild animal with mange.  First off, they're wild animals.  Second, if they're sick or frightened, they can behave very unpredictably.  You also don't want to catch whatever they have.

Illinois Extension recommends contacting wildlife professionals or licensed rehabilitators when an animal appears to need help. There's a huge list of rehab centers in Illinois you can contact here if you spot an animal in distress.
