An Illinois mom is continuing her fight to strengthen child grooming laws after what happened to her teenage son more than a decade ago.

Michelle Peterson said her son was just 15yrs old when she found explicit text messages from one of his former teachers.  She says overhearing a conversation tipped her off that something was wrong, setting off a case that would become groundbreaking.

The teacher was arrested, charged and convicted of grooming in 2013, and believed to be the first grooming conviction of its kind in the United States.  Despite the case, Michelle says the punishment didn't fit the crime.  The teacher was sentenced to 30 days in jail, probation, and 10 years on the sex offender registry.

Now, this Illinois mom is pushing for tougher penalties in Illinois, arguing the current law is too weak and leaves children vulnerable.  She wants lawmakers to amend the state's grooming law, including making convicted groomers stay on the sex offender list for life.

"So we're trying to amend the current grooming law in Illinois. However, it's been sitting in committee for the last three years, never called for a vote" [cbsnews]

Some Illinois lawmakers reportedly agree changes are needed, saying stronger consequences could better protect children and hold offenders accountable.  For this mom, this has become much bigger than her family's story.  It's about closing loopholes, protecting kids, and making sure grooming crimes carry penalties she believes match the lasting harm they can cause.
