Two Classic Drive-Ins America Loves Are Closer to Us Than You Think
If you're going to hop in your car to get something to eat, you might as well go to a place where you can get your meal served while you're on your ride.
I saw this story from Taste of Home about the Best Old-School Drive-Ins around the Country. Since I just shared the news about the iconic Sam's Drive-In selling off all its stuff, I was interested to see if anywhere near the Rockford area would measure up to that now-closed place.
Turns out, there are one or two different drive-ins relatively close to us.
Ardy & Ed's: A Blast from the Past in Oshkosh
First, Taste of Home says Ardy & Ed's is the spot saying the "drive-in is a true blast from the past with carhops on roller skates taking orders and whisking food to car windows."
Folks on Yelp call a visit to Ardy & Ed's a "must do," but others complain that they got "absolutely no service."
Ardy & Ed's is at 2413 South Main Street in Oshkosh.
Superdawg: Chicago's Iconic Drive-In Experience
In Illinois, the other drive-in we all need to check out is Superdawg.
Located in Chicago, Superdawg is not only one of the best spots for a hot dog in America, but Taste of Home now says it's one of the best for drive-in food, period.
Taste of Home says, "Drive up, place your order at the call box, and carhops will bring you the secret-recipe Superdawgs in retro-decorated cartons."
They did give one piece of advice, with which I fully agree: order the Whoopskidawg, a Polish sausage in a roll with grilled onions and pickles.
Yelp Reactions to Superdawg
Yelp reviewers say they have never had a "bad experience," but others have complained about food costs, saying that the lackluster service has "priced some out" as customers.
Superdawg is at 6363 North Milwaukee Avenue in Chicago.
Do you have any drive-in restaurants in the Rockford area that we should add to the list of the best in America?
