With summer in full swing, many Illinois homeowners are considering backyard pool projects.  Unfortunately, scammers know that demand is high and are using a variety of contractor scams to take advantage of families eager to enjoy a new pool before the season ends.

BBB Warning: Pool Contractor Scams Heat Up In Illinois

One of the most common schemes is the deep discount scam.  A contractor may offer an estimate that is thousands of dollars lower than competing bids.  While saving money is appealing, usually low prices can be a major red flag.  Some scammers use bargain pricing to secure a contract and collect payment before disappearing or delivering poor-quality work.  If one estimate is significantly lower than others, ask for a detailed explanation of the costs.

Another scam is the bait-and-switch.  A contractor agrees to a price, but after work begins, claims unexpected problems have arisen and demands additional payment to complete the project.  Homeowners may feel trapped after construction has started and pay far more than they originally agreed to.

Also, be cautious of licensing and insurance scams.  Some contractors falsely claim to be licensed and insured, or they may provide someone else's license information.  Before signing any contract, verify credentials directly with the appropriate state or local agencies and request proof of insurance.

The deposit scam is huge, too.  A contractor may require a large upfront amount to reserve materials or secure a spot on their schedule.  After receiving payment, they may delay the project indefinitely, perform minimal work, or disappear without a trace.

Avoid all of these kinds of contractors as best as possible!

Before hiring anyone, make sure to get multiple estimates, check references, reviews, and insist on a written contract.  Take a little extra time so you know exactly who you're working with, and of course, you want the pool of your dreams to come true!
