Everyone loves finding a great deal online, especially with how inflation is these days.  Unfortunately, scammers know that shoppers are always looking for ways to save money, and they're using fake coupons and discount codes to take advantage of customers.

According to the BBB, counterfeit coupon scams are on the rise across social media right now.  People are seeing these coupons pop up in email, on websites, and even text messages.  These scams often appear legitimate because they use real company logos, branding, and promotional images.  In many cases, the discounts seem almost too good to pass up, with offers claiming 70%-90% off popular products.

The scam usually begins when a consumer sees a coupon or promotional code advertised online.  The offer may appear in a Facebook post, Instagram ad, email, or text message claiming to be from a well-known retailer.  After clicking the link, shoppers are redirected to what looks like an official company website and encouraged to complete a purchase using the special discount code.

The problem is that the website is often fake.

After placing an order, consumers may receive a confirmation email and even a tracking number.  Days or weeks later, the package never arrives.  Some victims discover the tracking number was fraudulent, while others find the website has disappeared completely.  Attempts to contact customer service often go unanswered, leaving shoppers without their money or the products they ordered.Illinois Shoppers Warned About Risky Weight Loss Products Sold Online

Beyond losing money, consumers may also provide scammers with sensitive personal information, including names, addresses, phone numbers, and credit card details. The BB recommends being cautious of deals that seem unusually generous.  Before making a purchase, verify the coupons directly through the retailer's website or app.
