Reese Witherspoon and Mindy Kaling in Talks to Join ‘A Wrinkle in Time’
Not much is known about the cast of A Wrinkle in Time, Ava DuVernay’s adaptation of Madeleine L’Engle’s beautiful and strange book about a young girl named Meg Murry who journeys through space and time to find her scientist father. As DuVernay gets ready to head into production this fall, Disney is eyeing a couple of familiar faces to join the cast.
According to The Hollywood Reporter, Reese Witherspoon and Mindy Kaling are in negotiations to play two of the three women who send Meg on her journey. Witherspoon will play former celestial being turned “grandmotherly hobo” Mrs. Whatsit, alongside Kaling as the Greek- and Roman-literature-quoting Mrs. Who.
Oprah Winfrey has, until now, been the only known member of the cast, having signed on to play Mrs. Which, the mysterious and authoritative leader of the three who speaks her words veryyy slooowlyyy. So far only the Mrs.es have been cast, but it’ll definitely be cool to see this powerful, diverse trio in action. They appear multiple times throughout the book to transport Meg and her friends from one place to another, and to encourage Meg to be brave and realize her potential.
Jennifer Lee, who wrote and co-directed Disney’s Frozen, is writing the script. We don’t know for sure when filming will start, but The Hollywood Reporter says DuVernay is looking at November. A Wrinkle in Time will be in theaters April 16, 2018.
