Watch Rob Thomas Accidentally Clobber Bandmate During Illinois Concert
Rocking a Little Too Hard: Matchbox Twenty's Springfield Mishap
Matchbox Twenty performed at the Illinois State Fair in Springfield a couple of days ago, and the band is going viral on social media over an onstage incident.
It was during the performance of "Bent" that the group's frontman, Rob Thomas, started swinging his microphone stand around on stage.

When Stage Antics Go Wrong: Rob Thomas Hits Bandmate
First, doing that on stage with people nearby didn't seem like a good idea, and second, it was confirmed to be a bad idea.
That's because Thomas accidentally slugged bandmate Paul Doucette in the head with the stand. Doucette, who plays drums and guitar for Matchbox Twenty, had to leave the stage for a moment after getting smacked.

Thomas quickly realized what had gone wrong and was visibly upset and apologetic, letting the crowd know Doucette was his best buddy. Doucette did return to the stage with a drink in his hand and joked about the accident.

Post-Show Recovery: Tweezers, In-Ear Monitors, and Tour Prep
Jokes aside, the mic stand did some damage: Doucette's in-ear monitor was busted in his ear, and staff had to remove the tiny bits with tweezers.
Nevertheless, Doucette and the rest of the band finished the show. For everyone's enjoyment besides Thomas and Doucette, the entire thing was caught on video.
Matchbox Twenty's next tour date is in September in Utah. Just enough time for Doucette to recover, get a new in-ear monitor, and maybe invest in a football helmet.
