Poor Air Quality Forces Rockford City Market To Cancel

Rockford City Market is canceled tonight due to poor air quality in and around the area.

On Facebook, organizers said, "Mother Nature said not tonight," adding, "Due to poor air quality, Rockford City Market is closed this evening."

Rockford City Market Canceled Over Canadian Wildfire Smoke Concerns

If you're out of the loop, smoke from Canadian wildfires continues to blanket northern Illinois, including Rockford and Chicago. Earlier today, the news broke that Chicago's air quality was deemed "worst in the world" because of the smoke.

Health officials are advising that time outdoors be limited for kids, older adults, and people with asthma or heart and lung conditions.

Plume of Pollution: Inside the "Rubbery Plastic" Haze Blanketing Rockford

Visibility in the Rockford area is very low at this time, and the sky appears hazy. The smell isn't like a campfire, though; it feels almost like a rubbery plastic stink that's hard to describe.

Hopefully, this won't be around for too long, but it isn't the first major Rockford event to be canceled because of the smoke.

More Event Cancellations: Discovery Center Postpones Outdoor Foam Party

The Discovery Center's foam party scheduled for today has also been postponed, but encouraging families "looking for a place to play to visit our indoor exhibits for a safe and fun day.

No word on when the foam party at the Discovery Center will be rescheduled. Rockford City Market plans to return next Friday, weather and, of course, air quality permitting.
