Superstitions have always fascinated me because of the way we attach a meaning to the smallest, most ordinary things.

A black cat crosses your path?

A coin found heads-up on the ground?

A bird pooping on you?

There's something comforting about believing the universe sends little signs to guide us, warn us, or remind us we're not alone.

One of the most enduring and beautiful superstitions I learned about recently: seeing a spider on Halloween.  It means a loved one who has passed away is watching over you.

Yeah, you see spiders all the time, but it's said that when the veil between worlds is thin, spirits find gentle ways to reach out to us.  Sometimes, that message crawls in on eight tiny legs.

Imagine that spider on your doorframe not as something to squish, but as your grandmother, your father, a friend stopping by to say hello.  Suddenly, it's not scary at all, it's comforting!  I love how these beliefs give meaning to unnoticed moments in life.  A ladybug on your arm might symbolize luck, a flickering candle could mean a spirit is nearby, and a feather on your doorstep might be a quiet hello from heaven.  Even if you don't believe in signs, maybe let ordinary things have a little bit more meaning next time.

So if you see a spider this Halloween, don't panic.  Well, don't instantly touch it either!  We don't want it to bite you.  But, maybe, just maybe, someone you love found a small way to remind you they're still here.  There are a few people I wish would send me a message, maybe a spider will cross my path on Halloween day!
