I went to my parents' house to visit recently and was absolutely shocked by what I saw in their backyard.

A minefield of tiny holes. It looked like someone had planted a bunch of mini landmines!

My mom said they started seeing tons of holes (more than usual!) in the grass and didn't know what was destroying the backyard.  They went out really late at night to see if they could catch whatever was doing the damage and discovered... squirrels.

Tons of squirrels were digging holes and rolling around in the grass.  Like, what?!

Is it the fertilizer my parents use?  Is their grass just that healthy?!  Well, here are a few reasons they're digging holes right now:

  • Storing food; nuts, acorns, seeds
  • Looking for their food
  • Digging to catch insects

My dad was so fed up with it that he bought cayenne pepper.  He'd heard if you spread cayenne pepper around the yard that it would deter squirrels.

"Squirrels generally dislike the smell and will avoid the area. You can also try using wire mesh or other barriers to prevent them from accessing the area." [RK]

But guess what? It made the situation even worse!

Go ahead, try the cayenne pepper trick.  Tell me if it works because it definitely didn't do a single thing to help my parents' squirrel problem!

If anyone has any tips or tricks for getting rid of these pesky squirrels, I'd love to hear them!  My dad would be so grateful haha.
