In some commercials, you'll hear the words "Your results may vary." Think of those words when you look over the results of a recent state-by-state study of kids and their favorite children's books.

Around our house, back when my kids were small, two favorite books rose above all others. For my son Spencer, it was The Berenstain Bears Go To The Moon. We read that book at bedtime every single night for over a year. My daughter Molly was all about How The Grinch Stole Christmas, and that book was also read every night for a year or more.

Neither one of those books takes the title as the overall favorite of Illinois kids. However, one of the authors of the two books I mentioned is the author of the Illinois favorite.

Wednesday Is Read Across America Day, Also Known As Dr. Seuss Day

With that in mind, Grand Canyon University (GCU) "went through Google Trends data from November 2020 to November 2021 to see which book is the most searched for in each state. Books that target an older audience, like the Harry Potter series, were not considered children’s books for the sake of this study."

Before we get to the favorite of Illinois kids, here's the overall most popular children's book in the United States according to the GCU study.

Yertle The Turtle is the story of a turtle who is king of a pond and decides to make his subjects stack up beneath him so he can see farther and expand his domain. He winds up taking things way too far, and is dislodged from his perch by Mack, the turtle at the bottom of the stack, who burps and causes Yertle to fall into the mud.

As to our Midwestern neighbors, here are their kids' favorites:

  • Wisconsin: Harold and the Purple Crayon
  • Minnesota: The Poky Little Puppy
  • Michigan: Owl Moon
  • Iowa: If You Give A Mouse A Cookie
  • Indiana: Harold and the Purple Crayon
  • Missouri: Harold and the Purple Crayon
  • Kentucky: The Cat in the Hat
