We're not talking just the gift here people, there's a lot more involved.

One time, I had to turn down a wedding invitation. It was a few months after I moved home from L.A. and I was broker than broke.

I knew that going to a wedding meant getting ready, getting there, potentially a hotel and getting a gift and my bank account just wasn't having it.

That was a smart decision, because since then I'm been to a ga-zillion weddings, and a bridesmaid in most of them.

Don't get me wrong, I LOVE being in weddings. Like for reals, no sarcasm. But it's definitely expensive. But who knew it was this expensive just to be a guest?

According to Market Watch, the average cost of attending a wedding has skyrocketed in the last few years, almost doubling since 2012.

In 2012, the average cost for one person to go to a wedding was $339, and in 2015, it is $673.

This statistic includes all of the transportation you may need to get to the event, including potential airfare and the cost of eating, sleeping and drinking near the wedding.

Another interesting point from this article, guests are spending less on gifts. Probably because it's costing so much more to attend the wedding.

Though it's only a few dollars, the average amount a guest is planning to spend on a gift has gone down from $109 in 2014, to $106 in 2015.
