The Rockford IceHogs history of their mascot "Hammy."

This year is the 40th anniversary of the BMO Harris Bank Center in Rockford, Illinois. Unfortunately, we can not have a big party to celebrate, so I thought it would be a fun idea to go back and take a look at the history of our downtown arena. I interviewed some people that have been involved with the building through the years. There have been some great stories. I have also been lucky enough to get some old school pictures to share too. When it comes to minor league sports in places like the Forest City. It is much more than just a game. It is all about the whole show. To survive, it needs to be entertaining for an entire family. Plus, it has to be an affordable night out.

The Rockford IceHogs have done a great job in putting together the complete package. Of course, the hockey is great but that is not all. There are giveaways, themes, games, and attractions to name just a couple of things.

It does not matter if you talk with a causal one game a year fan or diehard season ticket holder. When asked about what they like best about the team or attending a game, everyone will have a different answer. I believe if you followed up with the question, "what's the most memorable thing," it would be the mascot, "Hammy."

Do you know the history of "Hammy?" Well, with my recent interview with the team's very first general manager, Kevin Cummings, I asked him about it. Check it out for yourself.

The IceHogs were named by a fan contest. It was a big part of the marketing of the team. Things like the players, coaches, affiliation, staff, uniforms, and more would change. The one consistent part would be the mascot. Hammy is the face of the franchise.
