Tick Season Alert: Illinois Residents Reminded to Take Precautions
I hike a lot with my boyfriend and his dog, and let me tell you... she's an actual tick magnet. No matter how careful we are, I always find myself checking her ears, belly, and paws after every hike. It's a good reminder that it's not just pets who are at risk, but ticks can latch onto humans, too!

The Illinois Department of Public Health is reminding Illinois residents to be on high alert this time of year after someone became seriously ill with Powassan virus, which is a tickborne illness that had never been detected in Illinois before.
Tick Season Alert: Illinois Residents Reminded to Take Precautions
Officials are still trying to determine if the person picked up the illness in Illinois or elsewhere, but either way, it's a wake-up call. Ticks are very active while the weather continues to fluctuate into the 70s and 80s right now, and protecting yourself is key!
According to IDPH Director Dr. Sameer Vohra,
"people can also “Fight the Bite” by diligently checking themselves, their pets and children for ticks after spending time in areas where ticks live, such as in and near wooded areas, tall grass and brush. Removing ticks within a 24-hour period reduces the risk of potential disease transmission." [thelansingjournal]

The Powassan virus sounds terrifying because it can cause inflammation of the brian or spinal cord membranes, and in rare cases, even be fatal. But it's not the only tickborne illness we need to watch out for. Lyme Disease, Rocky Mountain spotted fever, Tularemia, and Ehrlichiosis are all found in Illinois, too. I know, lots of big words that sound scary, but if you're cautious and aware of what's out there you can lower your risk of getting sick.
Quick tips when hiking: stay to the center of the trails, wear light-colored clothing to spot ticks easier, and toss your clothes in the dryer after coming home. Don't get in bed right away because you could carry the ticks with you!
