We're used to celebrating holidays here in Rockford with fun giveaways all of over the city and that's also true this Saturday, free trees for Arbor Day? We're in!

Friday, April 26 is Arbor Day. If you, like me, know that means we're celebrating trees, but isn't sure what else the holiday is about, no worries, I have you covered.

According to Oxford Languages:

Arbor Day is 'a day dedicated to public tree-planting in the US, Australia, and other countries, usually observed in late April or early May.'

Well, would you look at that. I knew it was a day to celebrate trees, but I didn't know the point of the holiday was to plant them!

Now if you're thinking... how do you start planting a tree? Do you have to start with seeds or is there any easier way? You're in luck, we have a very easy way to celebrate in Rockford.

The City of Rockford Government posted on Facebook that they are hosting a tree giveaway this Saturday, April 27, to celebrate Friday's holiday.

The giveaway will happen at 3915 E. State Street at the former Magna Grocery Store starting at 9 a.m. The plan is to pass out the trees until 1 p.m. but it's first come, first serve.

Inside the post, you'll see a list of the tree species that will be available including Buckeye, Swamp, white oak, Catalpa, Hackberry, Buttonbush, Gray dogwood, Blue beech and sour gum.

Sour gum?! That sounds like the coolest tree ever! Plus I'm sure I'm not allergic to that one!

Spread the word and get ready to celebrate your new tree this weekend!
