Bride: Friend is ‘Too Fat’ To Be Bridesmaid
We are in the middle of wedding season and since there has been all sorts of craziness on the site regarding the "big day", (bridezilla emails, most popular first dance songs, etc.) I wanted to share this pretty sad story.
In an email to Easy Weddings:
My best friend since high school has chosen three virtual strangers to be her bridesmaids. She told me that I’m too fat to be a bridesmaid and that it will wreck her wedding photos. I’m a size 20. She’s a size 12. She’s invited me to the wedding, but I really don’t want to go. Will it look petty to decline?"
While the website does give an answer to her email, I'll give mine.
The best thing to do is decline the wedding invitation, don't send a gift, and never speak with that person ever again.
As a guy who has dealt with weight issues in the past and continues the fight daily, it's awful that someone who calls you a "best friend" would put you in that position.
For women it's even worse. Daily images have flooded young women's minds of what they should look like. That is not the standard. Whatever size you are, you should be happy with it. If you aren't, then take the steps to change it, but never let someone tell you what you need to look like.
How would you handle being asked to step out of a wedding because you were overweight?
