Charlie Puth + Kehlani Send LGBTQ+ Friendly Message in Vintage ‘Done for Me’ Video
Charlie Puth and Kehlani are caught in a fiery predicament in the music video for their fresh collab, “Done for Me.”
Dropped this Saturday (April 21), the visuals for the groovy track, which will appear on the 26-year-old singer’s upcoming album, Voicenotes (slated for release May 11), raises the burning question, “What have you done for me, lately?”
“I die for you, baby / Cry for you, baby / But tell me what you’ve done for me,” Puth grieves in the melody, with the 23-year-old songbird adding: “I won’t beg for your love, won’t say please / I won’t fall to the ground on my knees.”
The song’s funkadelic ‘80s essence, wanton vintage aesthetic and botanicals gardening various scenes of the video only serve to pepper a far more operative point in the RJ Sanchez and Brendan Vaughn-directed project.
Coincidentally, Puth and the "Honey" soloist both make a progressive push in the direction of queer and bisexual representation in the visuals for the tune; each star finds themselves wooing similar, apathetic female love interests — the latter even romances her girl with no judgemental forces at work.
Ultimately, human nature wins.
“I wanted to make a visual that represented how far we have come in society,” Puth tweeted of the LGBTQ+ transparency in the vid. “Love is love.”
Though the lyrics seem a far cry of a happy ending for neither musician, the larger discourse manifesting in the video is that love, of every spectrum, conquers all.
