Chicagohenge Is Back! How to Catch Chicago’s Most Breathtaking Sunset
The best natural light show in Chicago isn’t a fireworks display or a concert laser show—it’s Chicagohenge. Twice a year, this mind-blowing event lines up perfectly with the city’s grid, creating an unforgettable view as the sun rises and sets between skyscrapers. And this year, on March 20, 2025, it’s happening again.
What Is Chicagohenge?

Every spring and fall equinox, the sun aligns perfectly with Chicago’s east-west street grid, creating an incredible golden glow between the buildings. It looks like something straight out of a sci-fi movie. I’ve seen the photos and videos before, but I imagine seeing it in person is a whole different experience. It is on my Chicago Bucket List.

Where and When to Watch
Chicagohenge veterans say if you’re anywhere on an east-west street corridor between Kinzie and Madison, you’ll get a solid view. Sunrise and sunset are prime time, but be warned: everyone with a smartphone and an Instagram account will be there. Expect people standing in the middle of the street, blocking traffic, and risking their lives for the perfect shot.
The intersection of Washington Street and Michigan Ave along Millennium Park is the best place to view Chicagohenge. Anywhere between Randolph and Van Buren, along Michigan Avenue would be good viewing spots.
As I mentioned earlier, I've never been, so these other tips were good to know.
- March 20th 'should' (weather permitting) be the best day to catch Chicagohenge, but locals say it can also be seen on the surrounding days.
- Sunrise on March 19th is 6:53 a.m., sunset is at 7:03 p.m.
Can’t Make It? There’s Another One in the Fall
If March doesn’t work for you, don’t worry—the sun will do this all over again for the fall equinox in September. Same breathtaking views, same crowds risking it all for a photo.
Whether you see it in the spring or fall, Chicagohenge is one of those Chicago experiences you have to witness at least once.
