Illinois motorists are urged to be on high alert this time of year as deer season is in full swing and active more around dusk and dawn.

One of my biggest fears is hitting a deer while driving through a wooded area.  I know so many people who've served off into ditches to avoid hitting deer.  They're big when you're up close and personal with them!

Collisions are bound to happen any time of year, but deer give you little to no warning when they'll jump out in front of your car.  Let's be on alert more than ever.

Illinois Department of Transportation and Illinois Department of Natural Resources are reminding motorists that autumn is accompanied by deer mating season in Illinois. During this time of year, deer become especially active, mainly at dawn and dusk from October through December. [dnr]

According to a 2020 study, these were the top Illinois cities with the most crashed that involved deer.  I guess it's a good thing I live in Winnebago County because we didn't make the list!  Phew.

It never hurts to have driving tips in case you do come in close contact, or full contact, with deer this season.  It could happen in the blink of an eye.

  • Keep an eye on regions marked by deer crossing signs
  • If you spot a deer, reduce your speed; they tend to travel in groups
  • Attempt to graze the deer instead of swerving off the road & crashing
