The Best Free Things to Do in Rockford Before Winter Hits

Before winter hits in Rockford, I wanted to make a list of everything you should experience before you're cooped up inside!

We're pretty lucky with the kind of weather we're having in Rockford lately.  It's not super cold, no snow in sight, and we can still enjoy outdoors activities with shorts on (sometimes!).  When winter arrives, you know you'll be too lazy to get outside and do anything, so let's get it all in before it's here.

I'm all about adventure and hiking, so I'm going to suggest this to start: Hiking at Rock Cut, finding all the beautiful hidden gems inside the park, and going on an impromptu kayaking excursion!  The perfect little fall date, no doubt.

The Best Free Things to Do in Rockford Before Winter Hits

Walk or bike along the Rock River - Sinnissippi has breathtaking views of the river, and if you go at night around this time of year, you might catch All Aglow 2025 where Nicholas Conservatory and Gardens illuminate along the entire bike path.  It's beautiful!

Rockford's Public Art Scene & Murals - not enough locals know about all the larger-than-life art around town.  There are so many spots in downtown Rockford, I love finding new ones as I'm driving along Madison, State, or Main Street.

Visit Rockford Arboretum for ultimate Zen - I just found out about this place on Mulford.  Their discreet, hidden driveway is confusing, but once you're driving down the main path it reveals the most beautiful landscape and 12 acres of pure bliss. You have to see it for yourself!  I was blown away by how pretty it was, and you can't even hear the traffic from the main road.

Farmers Markets/Free events at Edgebrook Shopping Center

They always have community-oriented events with local farmers and vendors. Every time I leave work, Edgebrook's parking lot is packed!  Love seeing residents come together and support local, especially this time of year.

So, before you say, "it's too cold!!!," remember that winter will feel like an eternity when it hits Rockford.  Layer up, get a hot chocolate, and start exploring Rockford before you can't!
