There's nothing worse than getting an annoying song stuck in your head. I call them 'earworms' and here's a scientifically proven way to clear one from your brain.

For years I've had a 100% effective way to get the earworms out but science says there's a better way and it also has benefits beyond the de-worming. Overtime I get one stuck that I want out, I start singing this song by The Beatles and it removes the worm and doesn't stick around in the worm's place.

A group of psychologists at the University of Reading in London have a different method... Chewing gum. They found that when we chew gum, the amount of time we 'hear' the song running through our heads was cut by 33%.

Here's their hypothesis:

Our chewing creates "inner speech" - basically, our mouths move at a different rhythm than the song in our head, so it's distracting our brain.

The researchers even think the gum technique could work to get other things out of your head, like if you're obsessing over something. How the research was conducted is also a good read. You can find that here.
