When SNAP Benefits Will Return to Normal For Illinois Residents
The Illinois Department of Human Services has announced that full Supplemental Nutritional Assistance Program benefits will be restored for all recipients following the end of the federal government shutdown on November 12th.
SNAP payments in Illinois were paused on November 1st amid the government shutdown, which was the longest running shutdown in U.S. history. It halted federal funding for the program, and triggered a lot of legal challenges between the Trump administration and many states, including Illinois.
According to a press release from the IDHS, remaining November payments will be issued in the coming days, with all Illinois SNAP recipients expected to receive their full benefits no later than November 20th, 2025.
Government officials were finding ways to keep benefits flowing to help SNAP families, while retailers across the state were also waiting for clarity on SNAP benefit payments.
The agency emphasized that the impact of the funding lapse on Illinois families.
“The lapse in SNAP funding created unnecessary hardship for 1.9 million Illinoisans and businesses who rely on this federally funded program,” IDHS wrote, adding that the crisis “was entirely avoidable.” [sj-r]
They stated that the Trump administration had access to the funding necessary to continue SNAP for families, but did not utilize it, which left tens of millions of people at risk of hunger. Many families didn't know where their next meal would come from.
Nationwide, nearly 42 million people depend on SNAP for monthly food assistance. Illinois officials said they are moving quickly to ensure households receiving funding as soon as possible.
IDHS did encourage those benefiting, and currently hurting, to monitor their accounts over the next several days as payments slowly get returned to their accounts. The agency will continue working with federal partners to maintain consistency in benefit delivery.
